Great journal! You do a great job of showing how asking a series of questions and then oracling answers really shakes your solo play.
I find it funny that you find "just pick up and play" difficult, since that is Kal-Arath's greatest strength. Once it arrived for me, i went from reading it, to rolling up s charger, to playing my first session within minutes. I literally think i was playing a brand new RPG within an hour of opening the book.
Was that intentional? Did you design it that way, specifically because you find it hard to just get going?
Yes 100%! For me KA is definitely one I can grab and go without needing any other supplements or booklets.
This time with b/x I’m basically just charging forward and not allowing myself to slow down. Retconning, adjusting, and just doing whatever seems fun with the modules.
This is great, I love seeing how everyone adapts and reshapes Keep on the Borderland. You have done a few of the things I have also done to keep the module fresh, one thing I added to my games was the supplement Mike's World: The Forsaken Wilderness Beyond. Its a collection of 14 maps that expand the original with some new encounters that you can use or toss aside but it does have some desert to the southeast that I might use to slip in some of that good Kal-Arath flavor. Keep up the great work and I look forward to reading more of this game.
Great write up as always! I’ll have to check out the class options by welsh piper. I should be starting my OSE campaign soon! You’ve also given me an idea to explore, and maybe even publish!

Great write-up!
Always good to do a return-to-form to invigorate those creative energies.
I love the simple solve for the monster hotel - easy and replayable.
Thanks! More art and usable stuff coming down the pipe. Feeling a bit renewed!
"Letting the dice make the call, but not trying to do it all on the front end made for a good time, and allowed me to be surprised. "
I'm finding the same thing.
Absolutely! This is a core principle of my DMing style when playing with a group too.

Cheers thank you!
This is awesome! I have thought about doing this for a long time and just never decided to do it. Kudos!
Cheers thanks Matt!!
Glad you're posting again. Always cool to take some time off and recharge the creative batteries.
Cheers Dave thanks!!!

awesome. It’s a good supplement but maybe TOO many options. However the “roll a random benefit OR hp this level” choice is pretty cool.
Entertaining adventure! Did you write about you oracle system in some older post?
