When we last left Aîwar, he was preparing to travel back “home” to the capitol city of Ygg.
You can see those pages in the last post I made.
This time around, I wanted to test out the carousing tables, which resulted in Aîwar being jailed for a crime he may or may not have committed.
This turned into a good “quest starter,” which I was able to set up for a future exploration of Bleakwood. (See my article here Bleakwood: A Micro Hexcrawl)
Now, however, Aîwar would have to get back to his flophouse, the Drunken Dagger in Low Town, the southern slum of Ygg.
I utilized the Shadowdark core rules to generate the city itself, as well as the places of interest in each area, which resulted in more cool adventure ideas.
For this “city crawl” I loaded up the encounter die as a 1-3 no encounter, 4-5 yes, and 6 as a special encounter (I didn’t have to build this table as I never rolled a 6.)
As you’ll see from the images of my notebook, just getting across the city of Ygg was an ordeal all by itself.
I’ve also adopted the “Quest Log” idea at the end of sessions where a lot of random stuff happened like a video game style journal to remind me of possible threads to follow next time I pick up the sketchbook.
I also did a little intro to this chapter, in the form of images and flavor text to give more of the vibe of Tarvannion.
I hope you enjoy, please comment or share if you like it or want more!
Man, this is closest thing I've seen in a while to that classic, pure ol' pulpy dark fantasy ethos. You've really got that style in your bones! What kinds of materials are you using for those trees? Just black and grey watercolors? What's going on there?? And how linearly are you making all of this, is my question? Are the blog posts a log of sorta the order-of-operations for worldbuilding here?
Gotta ask: have you seen The Spine of Night (2021)?
Fantastic Work! Well done :D
