This sounds like a great time! I wonder if you've ever tried something similar using other random tables? Essentially my question is this: are the tables in Shadowdark significantly better than other games that supply a wealth of random generators (e.g. the second edition of black Hack, the second edition of knave, mausritter etc.)? I have a lot of game books and Shadowdark is kind of spendy but if the generators within are that good, then I think I'm sold.
Never played those others. There are tons of great random encounter charts out there...what sold me on Shadowdark was basically testing the core book to see: can I run an adventure completely from the book with no prep and never having run the system before? The answer was a big yes.
Shadowdark tables are d100 per biome type and they have alot of interesting situation points. KNAVE 2e has the best overall d100 "anything" tables. If you combine them ita endless grist.
I just joined a brand-new group (total strangers found on Meetup). We are testing Shadowdark (in some Viking themed setting) while the house-host prepares a campaign in Arden Vul for the spring. I really like the shoot-til-you-miss aspect of the spellcasting system.
I've only heard the phrase "unlockable content" in the context of video games.
Reading this, I'm once again battered with the stupidity of my decision not to back Shadowdark during the crowdfunding phase. I have heard nothing but good about it. This sounds like it was a blast and I'd love to hear about session 2 if/when it happens (or I missed it in your feed?).
thanks for sharing this. it's inspiring!
I’m so glad you liked it!
